Goodison Park has some of the most Iconic features of English football’s past still standing today in 2025, though for how much longer is in doubt as this is the club’s final season at Goodison. Although refurnished somewhat over the years, the Gwladys Street stand and Bullens Road Stand still retain elements of their original design and character. Both these stands designed by architect Archie Leitch, Bullens completed in 1926 and Gwladys in 1938.

Whilst researching and creating this commission I was constantly finding new features and elements that needed exploring, and finding clear images from the sixties is not easy, let alone in colour. The club kindly found time to give me access to the area’s needed to get photographs and information, and a chance to experience the unique Goodison charm.

The commission brief was to create a model of the Gwladys Street Stand, with a section of the pitch, and to include the church and chapel in the corner. We had to included part of the Bullens Road Stand as it was joined to the Gwladys Stand by the corner section which was a key feature of the stadium in its own right. Taking the pitch area to the penalty spot made sense as the main stand started there and gave the model uniformity. We also included the perimeter streets out side of the stadium.

The model is made from a selection of woods, plastics and metals. The terrace areas are carved as to are the seating blocks. The roof sections are scribed by a blunt scalpel to create a corrugated effect as are the church and chapel roofs to get the tiled effect. All materials used are formed and sculpted to create a desired effect. The street side of the stadium are bricked with all the windows cut by hand. This model is totally hand made.

Building these models, I try to represent a physical representation of their time as architecture like this is to frequently forgotten. This is a beautifully unique piece, I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did creating it.
